What we are doing

Research and compare between a Wind turbine and a Solar System

May 09

Since we have made contacts to many water pump solar system it seems that they are not interest in us that much due to our lack in financial support. SSSB would like to change our plan whilst we are waiting for the good news by install extra water tanks to the old water hall, that use to be our water hall 10 years ago.

We are doing this to extent what we have done in Sep. last year (installing a timer). We would like to install a 3,000 litre tank to enable our water system to pump only in the night time. The cost of the new thank is a bit too high than we expect so we will use the tanks that we have as a try out first if it does work we will get the new tank later.

Sunetra and friends has kindly send us £200 to support our project. We are deeply appreciate your kindness.

In Thailand there is no support from the government to install the solar system and we won't get anything back from the electricity authority if we want to do it we must pay the whole price but that is not what we are interested in. From our point of views, solar system is the best choice for the environment concern if the SSSB be able to do it, it can be an example for the local community because the monastery always be a place where people learn the good things from.

SSSB break our project in to two phases, water pump and Dhamma hall's roofing. We will do a small thing first that is our water pump that use to be the water source the village for many years. We would like to replace our system to the solar power pump system. If we can do it, it will be a good start to learn from. So we make contact withSolartron, but their system is quite costly (£7,800) to get enough power for our system. Another company is Leonics, they suggest the SPS-600 module which is cost £3,800 exclude 7 percents tax.

Solar power is easily to install and maintain 'Financial' is the main problem for us at the moment. We try to make contact to many companies, organizations and Universities in Thailand as much as possible but it seems that they are not interested in us that much. We have send a request to a friend from Sweden, Dr. Derek, he shows his interest in our project and trying to write a proposal letter to organizations in Europe and Amarica for us. If we are lucky our water pump won't be just a dream. Then the Dhamma hall's roofing will be our next target.

To find out which system is more suitable to replace our current water pump system, pumping water up from 50 meters down underground water to 20 meters high tank. Hopefully to save at least 3,000 TBH/month from the cost of power that the monastery pays monthly.

From our study and get some suggestion from many people win turbine is not suitable for the monastery as it generate noise, we have enough disturbing noise from military fighter jets. Solar power is the choice so we compare between the system that connects to the power grid and stand alone solar power system we decide that connect to the grid would be the idea for our system.

Install and test a system that helps saving power for the water-pump:

The price of power is different: day time = 4 THB/btu, night time = 1 THB/btu. We have decided to install a timer for the water-pump to enable us to help to reduce the cost of power. At the moment we are still testing whether it's enough water to use or not if we pump only at night time, if it is not, we are thinking of installing an extra water tank.

Seeking a new home for the monastery dogs and cats:

Making an announcement, asking people to take some monastery dogs and cats for keeping them at their house. The monastery has too many cats and dogs, we are unable to look after them well enough, so please help us looking after them.

What we have done

Aug 08

  • Create an English version of SsSB (it is still Thinglish 'Thai style of English', though)

Jun 08 Recycling Project

SsSB's Trah bin

July 08 Website

  • Create a sansook.wikidot.com website Thai version

July 08 Newsletter (in Thai)

  • Start the first newsletter (in Thai), name it "Sansook Soomboon", intend to publish it 3 times a year, according to seasons in Thailand (Rain : July, Cold : November and Hot : April)
  • The newsletter will be printed out to give away and available online in html and pdf
  • To advertise SansookSoomboon at the beginning the newsletter will be published - a special edition in suitable time.

On Going projects

  • Advertise and encourage the community to recycle and separate their rubbish
  • Encourage the lay community to give plastic bottle, tin can and used paper that they intend to through away to give to the monastery as a donation

What we wish to be done

  • Accommodation and library for children who wish to learn Dhamma in the monastery
  • New library system for the monastery
  • Toilet for disabled.
